Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Against the backdrop of sparsely settled western Nebraska at the turn of the 20th century, Mattie tells the story of a pioneer woman physician. Through the years of her practice, Mattie’s life is filled with romance and disappointments, battles won and loved ones lost, challenges met and opportunities passed. Through it all she endures. And as the years pass, her life takes on a richness and quality she knows she coiuld not have found anywhere else or at any other time.

Mattie offers a realistic and haunting portrait of life on the plains and of a most unforgettable woman.

Falling Under

Falling Under by Danielle-Younge-Ullman is 99 cents today in the Amazon Kindle store, and has received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars based on 47 customer reviews.

Category: Literary Fiction

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Gutsy and provocative, FALLING UNDER is the story of a reclusive young artist struggling to connect, and brave the world again.

Mara Foster is a mess. A rollercoaster of a childhood made a survivor of her, but as an adult she is a mass of contradictions and unrealized potential. Talented, fierce and smart, but burdened by a host of anxieties, Mara finds it difficult to leave the house most days, much less imagine anything resembling normalcy.

Then Mara meets Hugo, and the walls she has built around herself begin to crumble. As she fights for a breakthrough both in her art and in life, she must come to terms with her complicated past, in order to gain a second chance at happiness.

Written in spare, crisp prose and marked by wry humor, FALLING UNDER is a gripping contemporary tale of human frailty, friendship, and hard-earned redemption.

30 Books – 99 cents – This Weekend Only!

I received an email from my friend, Phoenix Sullivan, who some of you may recall is a pretty darn good independent author – I’ve featured her book Sector C both on this blog and the Free Kindle Books and Tips blog.  She wrote to tell me about a special promotion she and fellow author David Gaughran have organized: 30 books from 26 different authors where the pricing will be reduced to 99 cents for today through Sunday only.

Most of these books are normally $2.99 and up, and there are some bestsellers as well as undiscovered gems in this lot: I’ve profiled just a few of these in the past, but seeing as how there are new members all of the time on this little community, there are many of you who haven’t seen these books before.

The 30 books are listed below without the description – but they are listed with the title, author’s name, genre, and a link to the Kindle book’s Amazon page.  Remember, these will revert back to their regular pricing after this weekend, so if you are interested in any (or all) of them grab them now!

Thank you, Phoenix, for giving the blog readers the heads-up on this!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Born with blue in his collar instead of his veins, best-selling author Dean Cassidy chronicles his soul-scarring rise from New York’s darkest alleys to a place high atop the literary world.

As difficult and unlikely as such a climb is, there’s yet another force working against Dean. He’s forever haunted by treasured memories of his long-lost teenage soul-mate. Theresa! Theresa! Theresa! She just won’t go away!

Despite all Dean’s hang-ups and mental baggage, he eventually does marry another woman. And for twenty years his wife, Maddy Frances, remains so giving (and forgiving) she deserves to be canonized a living saint. Even after she finds Dean unconscious at a botched suicide attempt–a time-faded photograph of Theresa clenched in his hands—her love never wavers. But is Maddy’s loyalty enough to keep them together? Or will a force far stronger than fate alone change everything?

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Hannah Sullivan is not looking to have her beliefs challenged. She is not looking to fall in love, either. Her only ambition, when she and her daughter, Lily, take their first summer trip to New Hampshire’s Squam Lake, is a restful, scenic vacation. But she will soon learn that the world has another offering. Within minutes of their arrival that first summer, they meet a man named Aidan Heron. His is a gift that will teach them both, with an easy humor and a nearly fearless penchant for adventure, that life has more to offer than they’d ever understood. Shaped by tragedy in her youth, Hannah has learned to live a timid, closed life. And without realizing it, she has taught her daughter to do the same. But Aidan, a man who has experienced his own tragedy and responded very differently, will show them both a new way. Through ten years of shared summer vacations, Hannah will experience enthrallment, love and heartache. She will be challenged and will learn to challenge herself. And in the course of meeting these challenges, she will learn how to truly live.
